Nonlinear Ultrasonic Waves for Structural Health Monitoring
Nonlinear ultrasonic waves in solids have shown good sensitivity to quasi-static stresses. The stress sensitivity of elastic waves is typically associated to finite strains (e.g. theory of acoustoelasticity). In the case of waveguides, classical nonlinear theories for guided waves are still based on the assumption of finite strains. In the case of constrained solids subjected to thermal excursi...
متن کاملUltrasonic Signal Processing for Structural Health Monitoring
Permanently mounted ultrasonic sensors are a key component of systems under development for structural health monitoring. Signal processing plays a critical role in the viability of such systems due to the difficulty in interpreting signals received from structures of complex geometry. This paper describes a differential feature-based approach to classifying signal changes as either “environmen...
متن کاملAn Advanced Multi-Sensor Acousto-Ultrasonic Structural Health Monitoring System: Development and Aerospace Demonstration
A key longstanding objective of the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) research community is to enable the embedment of SHM systems in high value assets like aircraft to provide on-demand damage detection and evaluation. As against traditional non-destructive inspection hardware, embedded SHM systems must be compact, lightweight, low-power and sufficiently robust to survive exposure to severe i...
متن کاملInvestigation of ultrasonic waveguides for medical therapy
Theoretically it was determined that changing longitudinal rigidity of waveguide the longitudinal vibrations amplitudes are increasing. The cross-section of waveguide is decreasing from the generating point towards its free end. Experimental results show that the free end of the waveguide is influenced by longitudinal vibrations only, which could be used for blood vessels cleaning.
متن کاملUltrasonic structural health monitoring: Strategies, issues and progress
Several different strategies are being considered for ultrasonic structural health monitoring systems using a variety of approaches. Guided wave techniques for interrogating large plate-like structures have probably generated the most interest; these methods have the potential of monitoring large areas with a low sensor density while remaining sensitive to defects. The acousto-ultrasonic nondes...
